Nine at Millfield is different to how other schools approach Year 9. It has evolved from our passion to provide the very best education for every student to enable them to discover their brilliance. Between the ages of 13 and 14 most students need a little extra guidance. The transition from prep or junior school to Year 9 can be challenging even for the most confident and accomplished children. We offer an age appropriate learning programme for this year group that provides students with increased opportunities to flourish. We know that students do best when they are known, nurtured and challenged. Our pastoral programme has the staffing experience and resourcing so that everyone is known and nurtured. We have the scale and rigour so that all are challenged, whatever their aptitude in life. We also have a lot of fun that ensures life-long friendships are made.

Academic
Millfield seeks to discover brilliance in young people of wide-ranging abilities and provides a rich and varied curriculum to bring out the best in everyone. No two students are the same. That is why we believe in offering breadth, depth and choice so that students can tailor their studies and play to their individual strengths.
This is brilliant!
We have carefully designed what we teach and the order that we teach it in at Millfield – the Brilliance Curriculum. This is an exciting way of learning that connects subjects together. For example, you might learn about a historical period in your History lessons which helps you understand the poem you are studying in English so that your understanding becomes much deeper. We have small class sizes, with on average only 13 children in a Year 9 class, so the teacher has plenty of opportunity to help everyone in the class during a lesson (it also means there is no hiding at the back!). You will be carefully grouped so that the teachers can give you the right level of stretch, challenge and support when you need it. There are sets for Maths and Languages, which are organised in the first few weeks of school. Extra English and Maths lessons are available to those students who are placed into classes who need additional support.
Subjects
Art Biology Chemistry Digital Skills English (Learning Support English) Food and Nutrition Geography History Languages (Chinese, French, German, Latin & Spanish) Mathematics Music Physics Product Design Religious Studies
Enrichment
Progress of top academics is overseen and monitored by the Head of Academic Culture to ensure that our provision is sufficiently challenging. This may be greater subject content or higher-order thinking skills. Regular enrichment activities include subject breakfasts, evening lectures, academic competitions and a fortnightly group meeting for all top academic students across the school.
Study Support
Study Support lessons are offered by our Learning Support Centre (LSC) teachers by prior agreement. All students with AEN (Additional Educational Needs) can access help and advice during lunchtime workshops within the LSC. These sessions are run by experienced SpLD (Specific Learning Difficulties) teachers so a range of literacy and study skills can be taught and developed. There is excellent access to assistive technology and a wide range of resources to support learning.
English as an Additional Language (EAL)
The EAL Department provides language support for international students whose first language is not English. They also prepare students for the Cambridge ESOL Exams, the IGCSE English as a Second Language qualification in Years 9 and 10, and the IELTS examination in the Sixth Form.
Reading
Private reading is an essential part of student development; for academic progress and personal development. Reading is an established part of our Year 9s daily experience, with all boarders given time to read for 30 minutes before lights out and there is a junior reading zone in the Library. Writers are often invited to school and in recent years we have been fortunate to have visits from Marcus Sedgwick, Sally Gardner and Tanya Landman.
Careers
The Futures department run a very varied programme from the start of Year 9. In addition to careers talks from experts in different fields, Year 9 students will be visited in their houses (boarding and day) to discuss future career aspirations, followed by more personal sessions with Futures in the lead up to choosing their Year 10/11 programme. Students will decide their subject choices at the end of the spring term having experienced so much that is new both in and out of the classroom. There will be information and presentations about the option subjects they have not studied in Year 9 and a lot of support from Group Tutors at this time.
“My favourite thing is the mix and balance of sport and academic ”

ART, DESIGN AND TECH
From the ‘Big Draw’ festival, to the weekly ‘Art and Photography Experience’ to competitions, students can create mixed media pieces and animation, time-lapse photography, stop motion and mini films. Our Atkinson Gallery displays professional artists work alongside student work.
COOKERY
Who doesn’t love baking and the treat of eating it all afterwards? Recipes covered vary from chocolate brownies through to katsu curry and bread making, all done in a relaxed and supportive environment. And of course, we have a ‘Bake Off’.
Co-Curricular
Exposure to the Arts is essential in providing a rounded education. Our aim is to extend student opportunities and experiences, help them find ways of expressing themselves creatively and enhance their enjoyment of school life.
DANCE
Year 9 dance integrates creative, technical and expressive movement skills in sessions that are fun, engaging and suitable for all. Students explore contemporary, street and musical theatre dance styles, with options for further study in ballet, jazz, choreography and fitness. Students are invited to audition for one of four dance companies, working collaboratively with dancers from across the year groups on performance projects, including the annual dance show.
DEBATING
Debating is an excellent tool to encourage higher and critical thinking skills. Putting across a point of view and being able to think clearly under pressure, in what can be seen as a daunting arena, is fantastic for building confidence in public speaking, which is such an unique life skill.
DRAMA
The Year 9 drama co-curricular programme offers skills-based training sessions, scripted and devised projects as well as opportunities in technical theatre, playwriting and LAMDA Speech and Drama. Performances range from small ‘Tea and Drama’ events to full length productions, with recent works including Nights at the Circus by Angela Carter and Laura Lomas’s Chaos. Visits from professional theatre companies enhance students’ creative understanding, providing them with opportunities to watch and devise their own work.
MUSIC
Our music department is one of the largest in the UK with world-class facilities. With 40 strong music staff, our state of the art facilities include a 350-seat Concert Hall, Recital Foyer, two professional standard recording studios, four iMac suites, a specialist percussion room, and a superb collection of instruments, including a Steinway Model D Concert Grand. Our extensive concert calendar features up to 60 events each year with performances from solo recitals to large-scale ensemble concerts and chamber music concerts to contemporary evenings, musicals, festivals and a Concerto Concert. Musicians also benefit from our external performance calendar, including renowned global music festivals and competitions, worldwide concert tours, performances at Wells Cathedral, an International Concert Series and professional Masterclasses.

Indoor and outdoor, practical and creative, adventurous and reflective, mentally and physically challenging, there is a rich variety of activities from which to choose.
There are more than 100 options and students are encouraged to try a different activity each term to ensure that they do something that will teach them a new skill, perhaps community service based, physical or academic. Sport
Sport will always provide the opportunity to learn about yourself, especially when under pressure, learn about others, whether a teammate or opponent, and learn about the culture and behaviour in which you perform.
We aim to provide a broad multi-sporting experience in Year 9 whilst also allowing students to spend time on their main sporting passion. Sport helps develop friendship groups and aids settling in. It also promotes taking responsibility, finding limits and being curious about individuals own development. For many, the volume and intensity of training increases. Our diversity and range of sporting options, our emphasis on specialist sports coaches, and our flexible scheduling around sport and education make Millfield a unique development environment for any child looking to enjoy their time in sport. The sporting options vary across the week and term depending on playing seasons. The core structure of the week looks like this in Year 9:

Within the school programme we also have the flexibility to structure a programme to support those in earlier specialisation sports or those who request specific 1-to-1 coaching, subject to the criteria being met for private coaching. After Year 9, students’ Games choices progress to a broad landscape of over 27 sports and activities. This is an unrivalled offer, delivered by enthusiastic and skilled tutors and coaches. We are very proud of our record as a pre-eminent school for sport, with multiple National Championships and world-class graduates each year. Millfield Sport supports athletes through expert coaching, with appropriate physical and personal development and challenging competition. Millfield is home to nearly 50 international sporting representatives at any one time. Famed for our facilities alongside our unique blend of coaching, education and outstanding pastoral care, we are able to offer an environment increasingly recognised by world-class partners. We are supported by several Olympic and non-Olympic Governing Bodies, and have personal relationships with professional clubs and all the UK’s leading sports universities. Our measure of success is in our ability to prepare young people, through sport, for their transition from Millfield. For some, this could be a university in the UK, US or elsewhere, leading onto National Governing Body pathways or professional academies to continue their path to high performance. For others, it is about finding a sport or activity that provides a social environment with friends, so they remain active and healthy throughout their lives, and sport prepares them for the challenge of working in a modern world.
Team sport options are: football, rugby, hockey, netball, basketball. Some sports which train across year groups e.g. fencing, swimming, triathlon, among others, will have different training times and opportunities outside of the core structure above.
“It’s fun boarding and the sport is good .”
Boarding at Millfield
Millfield is a full boarding school and its boarding staff pride themselves on their provision of care to students. We deliver this in a compassionate and supportive way and, although the school is a very busy place, we create a family atmosphere within the boarding community.
Millfield boarding is about respect, humanity and moral courage whilst recognising that students will need resilience in facing the challenges that school and life will bring. We create a tolerant and child-centred environment, where our staff guide and shape the lives of the youngsters in our care. Children in their first year at senior school, for many of which boarding is completely new, need nurturing and guidance during this stage of their lives. As teenagers they are experiencing emotional and physical as well as educational changes. For this reason, our Year 9 boarding houses are located in the heart of the school, with high staff to student ratios that creates a community where every child can feel completely at home.
House staff quickly get to know each individual as they are responsible for both the student’s academic and pastoral wellbeing.
HOUSES
The Year 9 Boarding Houses are Acacia (girls), Keen’s Elm (boys) and Millfield House (boys). These houses, along with the Year 9 Day House, Ivythorn, form a crescent around the central golf course, creating a Year 9 neighbourhood in the middle of the school from which the students can easily access everything on offer to them. The garden within Keen’s Elm provides Year 9s with a haven to relax and socialise.
MEALS
All meals are served in the dining room (with the exception of some halal meals). Year 9 go to breakfast and supper with their Houses and their duty staff. Students can make their own snacks in House during break times and evenings.

WEEKENDS
Exciting weekend activities are arranged for boarders. Some are whole year group activities but we also have a number of relaxed weekends that are designed to be a lot of fun as well as providing some downtime.
WEEKENDS FOR DAY STUDENTS
There are whole year activities on some Sundays and day students are expected to attend these. We welcome day students to join the boarders for other weekends, although we ask that housemasters/housemistresses have sufficient notice so that food and transport can be arranged.
DAY STUDENTS
Just under a third of Year 9 are day students who are fully integrated into the school community and enjoy to the full all the opportunities Millfield has to offer. The Day House opens at 8am for registration and a tutorial session with Group Tutors. Day students return home after lessons, games, MAP or whatever they may be involved in. Typically this will be at 5.15pm but students’ commitments will vary. Students are welcome and encouraged to stay for supper with boarders and to make use of the silent working area for prep (homework). The Day House remains staffed and open until 7.30pm each weekday. There are lessons on Saturday mornings, after which day students may leave, unless involved in sports fixtures/training in the afternoon.
INDUCTION
There is a new students’ event, held in the summer term preceding the start of Year 9. Students visit the boarding house, meet housemasters/housemistresses and tour the school. Parents receive a talk from the housemasters/housemistresses outlining expectations and communications. It is also a good time to meet other families. House Handbooks covering everything you need to know will be sent to parents and students in June prior to joining Millfield and house staff write a letter of welcome to new boarders. Joining instructions will be sent from Admissions in the summer term with all relevant information.
ARRIVING AT SCHOOL
New boarders start a day before the rest of the school on a Sunday morning/afternoon. Day students will meet their housemaster/housemistress at the times issued in housemaster/housemistresses’ letters.
“Hanging out with my friends and having breakfast with all of them and going outside, makes me happiest .”

Useful information
WORSHIP
All students, irrespective of their religion, are encouraged to explore and develop their own faith, and learn from that of others, in an atmosphere of generosity and tolerance. The Spiritual Director is responsible for the ongoing liturgical and spiritual life of the community and is available to everyone. There are three services each week in The Sanctuary and a Choral Eucharist each term in Wells Cathedral. The Sanctuary is dedicated for use as a place of worship for all faiths. So, in addition to Christian services, Muslims, Jews, Hindus and Buddhists have the opportunity to meet with local leaders of these faiths. Roman Catholic students attend Mass in Glastonbury and can be confirmed every other year. An Anglican Confirmation course runs every twelve months.
Spiritual Support
Through year group assemblies, quiet, contemplative activities and Soul Café (a lunchtime slot with visiting speakers), theological reflection is shared. The aim is to sow the seeds of tolerance, patience and generosity.
CLOTHING
The clothing guide is part of the induction information provided by Admissions to new starters. There is an A or B uniform option for every day uniform, formal uniform and sports kit, that must be adhered to. Students are expected to be smart and tidy avoiding all extremes of dress.
OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT
A list of clothing and items will be included in induction information from Admissions.
LAUNDRY
Laundry is taken in once a week for cleaning by the school laundry service and is usually returned within 48 hours. Please ensure that your child has enough clothes, towels etc. to survive for about ten days. There are washing machines and tumble dryers in House. Routine laundry is included in fees but there is a charge for hand washing and dry cleaning.
PASTORAL CARE AND CONTACT
Each student has their own Group Tutor. Parents are encouraged to make contact with their child’s Group Tutor at any time in regard to their child’s progress. The assistant housemasters/ housemistresses then oversee any larger academic issues and meet weekly with the Head of Year and housemasters/housemistresses to monitor progress and discuss individuals. All of these staff will play a large part in ensuring a student is happy and engaged in their day to day life. Students will also be able to contact the Spiritual Director and the Counsellor, both of whom are accessible every day. We encourage students to find an adult on campus with whom they will feel comfortable talking to.
PRIZE GIVING
Year 9 Prize Giving takes place during the summer term. This will be a chance for us to celebrate the year’s achievements and to recognize individuals who have achieved great things in Year 9. It is the expectation that no student will leave before the end of term, so that the whole Year 9 community can celebrate this day.
