Hear from our boarders
Joining a boarding school can come with a mix of emotions – it’s exciting, but also a bit nerve-wracking too! To help you prepare for boarding at CLC, we put together advice from current students, and Head of Lower College Ms Woodhead, to help you understand more what it might be like.

Wellbeing and pastoral
Wellbeing is a vital part of life at CLC, and you will take part in weekly wellbeing sessions, PSHE lessons and special events. Our three-tier pastoral support, connecting the houses, tutors and academic divisions, means that each student is supported across every aspect of her life at College. You’ll also have support from our Medical Centre, fully staffed with registered nurses available 24/7, and with access to mental health support and physiotherapy, if needed.

Living in Cheltenham
In a CLC boarding house, you’ll be living just a few minutes’ walk away from the centre of Cheltenham. A safe and leafy town, you’ll have easy access to all the shops, cafes and entertainment Cheltenham provides – in younger years a member of House staff will come into town with you and your friends, and as you get older you’ll be allowed to go in groups on your own. Many girls make the most of living here, going out to the cultural festivals, theatres, cinemas and shops.
5
weekend programme
On top of the weekday activities in your house there is also a Weekend Programme of year-round events for you to take part in alongside all the boarders and day girls. These include roller discos, zorbing, ice skating and trips outside of Cheltenham, on top of sporting activities, crafting and games that take place here at College on weekends.

House Families
To join a boarding house at CLC is to join a global community of like-minded girls and young women. Over 40 different countries are represented in the student body, so you’ll make life-long friends and connections from around the world. That even continues after you leave CLC, as you become a member of Guild, our supportive network of over 8,000 alumnae you can call on around the globe.

House Life
Life in a boarding house is fun and friendly, a real home away from home. You’ll never be bored in your house, with games and activities planned every evening as well as beautiful communal spaces for down time with your friends. Every house has music practice rooms and dedicated study rooms, lounges and common rooms for you to use, and gardens for outside fun. In between all the activities you’ll also have plenty of time to speak to friends and family from home too.

World Leading Education
CLC is world-renowned for our holistic approach to bringing learning to life, as well as our exceptional exam results – that is why we were named best in the South West by The Sunday Times in 2025. You’ll be encouraged to try new things and learn about lots of interesting subjects, developing your talents and discovering new passions.

Main College site
Almost all our academic facilities and classrooms are housed on one site, and it is here that you’ll do most of your timetabled lessons.
The first CLC building was built here in the 1860s and you’ll notice a range of architecture through the decades from the Victorian gothic grandeur of the science and music blocks, through to the modern, glass Art and EET block.
Our main hall, the Princess Hall, is located on this site, and you’ll gather here regularly for Prayers (our morning assembly). You’ll also find the Library and the PGC Hub here.
Health and Fitness Centre (HFC)
Featuring a 58-station fitness gym, two sports halls, a climbing wall, a 25m swimming pool, studios and squash courts, the HFC offers outstanding facilities to support sport at CLC. Our approach to PE and sport is based on physical literacy, where the focus is on improving our pupils’ ability to make physical activity an integral part of their life during and beyond College.
Alongside the more traditional sports of hockey, lacrosse and netball – which are played throughout the Autumn and Spring Terms – we offer tennis, rowing, squash, skiing, equestrian, fencing, football, swimming and athletics run all year round. On top of these, we offer dance clubs, exercise classes including spin and yoga, an outdoor education/activities programme, and a wide range of recreational clubs such as volleyball and badminton.
Parabola Arts Centre
Opened in 2009, our theatre has a capacity of over 300 and is an excellent space for conferences, debates and drama and dance performances, which have recently included Grease and Sleeping Beauty. The building also features a stunning gallery space to showcase student work from our Art department, and our Higher and Extended Project Qualifications.
Cheltenham
Our location means you’re never too far from central Cheltenham, its beautiful parks and thriving town centre, or from the idylic rolling hills of the Cotswolds. Sixth Formers have the flexibility to walk into town in free periods and are encouraged to make the most of the year-round programme of Festivals which regularly attract world-renowned speakers and performers.

Boarding
Whether you are new to College or have been at CLC for five years, everyone has a new house when they join Sixth Form.
Our five Senior Boarding Houses (for 16–18 year olds) are situated in a residential area between the main College site and the Health and Fitness Centre. Each one has its own unique personality and atmosphere, but they all offer comparable facilities: single bedrooms, dining rooms, common rooms, prep rooms, computer rooms, space for music practice and laundry facilities.
