Digital Transformation In Fire Safety
By 2040 we will have played a central role in transforming fire safety globally though the innovative fusion of emerging technologies and expert knowledge. We are investing in digital, adapting the latest technologies and skills needed to not only disrupt, but to positively transform our sector around the world.
We have a clear vision of the future.
We support government initiatives such as the Centre for Digital Built Britain and its approach to use digital technologies to better design, build, operate, and integrate our built environment. We have witnessed significant fire events over the past decade that are now driving fundamental change in fire safety. A core tenet of the change is an unrelenting drive for assurance that buildings are built safe and operate safely. We believe the time to act is now and you can play your part in our growing team. We must transition fire safety into a digital world. We are working hard to resolve the immediate challenges, as together we set strong foundations to achieve our shared vision for the future.
built safe and operate safely.
and
Join our team as we overcome some of the key challenges presented by the ‘as is’ fire safety ecosystem. At this moment, we are particularly focused on the digital transformation of compliance processes. This aligns with the agenda of the Digital Compliance (D-COM) Network, which was developed as part of the Centre for Digital Built Britain (CDBB) – a partnership between Britain’s Department of Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy and the University of Cambridge. The ‘as-is’ fire safety ecosystem in our operational buildings is vast and complex. Fire safety information is disparate and sits largely in unconnected silos. Information is typically captured through paper based compliance checks and spreadsheets. When this process is applied across buildings, portfolios and cities, it becomes increasingly challenging to understand the status of fire safety in our built environment. There is a lack of resources to meet this challenge using ‘as is’ approaches. There are many compliance departures and unauditable processes at present. In efforts to satisfy regulations and ensure compliance, documents are currently transferred manually, and issues identified rely on word of mouth communication up the chain in order to be resolved. This manual data transfer method creates complexity and confusion, often leading to risky and costly non-compliance issues in buildings. An outline of the ‘as is’ fire safety ecosystem and interdependencies that govern fire safety is shown in the figure below.

Our experienced engineers have developed TFS COMPLIANCE to be the mutualism between compliance checks and digital workflows in the new fire safety ecosystem.
Digital Fire Safety Ecosystem
TFS COMPLIANCE
collects and curates the data within the fire safety ecosystem to facilitate the instant availability of all fire safety information in real time.
provides for a single and real-time source of truth in supporting the ongoing safe operation of buildings, portfolios of buildings and our entire cities. This is delivered using smart technology. It supports the golden thread of digital data that provides a compelling, comprehensible, body of evidence, allowing the duty holder and accountable persons to proactively manage and control fire risks within their building or portfolio.
The solution is unique and supports the implementation of the chain of custody, putting fire safety into the hands of many with clear allocation of responsibility, and creating strong governance with actionable insights.
The solution is positioned to also satisfy the proposed regulatory changes in the UK (Draft Fire Safety Bill) which seek to mandate for a ‘Building Safety Case’ via the building safety regulatory system.
This solution is uniquely developed by fire safety engineers to address an age-old and ongoing fire safety challenge for the built environment.
The time to act is now, so that the right people have the right information at the right time. This will ensure buildings are built safe and operate safely throughout their life cycles.
There are future automations under development, governed by expert fire engineering research and oversight. TFS COMPLIANCE currently has the key functionalities and benefits (detailed below) to facilitate a safer built environment.

The Health Cash Plan (HCP) is a company-paid plan designed to make it easier for team members to look after their routine or everyday health care needs by providing cashback on a range of health benefits including dental care, optical care, physiotherapy and wellbeing.
Joule Group UK/NI has partnered with National Employment Savings Trust (NEST) to manager our Company Pension Scheme. All team members will be automatically enrolled in the scheme upon joining the company. This scheme allows team members to build up a pension fund for retirement and use later in life. From April 2019, the statutory workplace pension contributions are 3% of basic salary for the employer and 5% of basic salary for the team member. However, Joule Group offers additional enhanced contributions.
All employed pregnant women are entitled to 52 weeks of maternity leave. This is made up of 26 weeks of ordinary maternity leave and 26 weeks of additional maternity leave. Joule Group also provides additional enhancements for our team members.
Joule Group is continuously striving to establish a strong learning environment to enable all team members to truly flourish and grow. This year, we aim to establish a structured Learning & Development Policy incorporating a Training Assistance Program. The program will be designed to provide eligible team members with the opportunity for financial reimbursement for specific courses that will in turn support the enhancement of their skills and capability in both the current, and future work world.
Private Medical Insurance (PMI) offers our team members fast access to quality private medical facilities and medical treatments for those non-routine or newly diagnosed conditions. PMI is designed to cover you to have secondary medical treatment privately.
Team members may be eligible for Statutory Paternity Leave of up to two weeks to care for their baby or adopted child.
Joule Group offers a discretionary Occupational Sick Pay (OSP) scheme which goes above and beyond Statutory Sick Pay - also known as a Company Sick Pay scheme. Team members will receive payment for absences attributed to illness or injury.
Joule Group also operates a flexible working time scheme to support team members in achieving a better work-life balance. This system allows team members to occasionally work more flexible hours by coming into work later, going home earlier or having a longer lunch break than a set pattern of working hours would dictate. This scheme is aimed at allowing team members to attend to ad-hoc personal appointments, recreational activities or other personal matters that arise from time to time.
Flexi-time
Agile or Hybrid Working
Joule Group also offers hybrid or agile working options where all team members have the autonomy to work from home, from their local office or a combination of both. This dynamic work option was a result of our learning over the past 12 months. We can reduce our carbon footprint and reduce non-productive commute times - all while still encouraging teams to collaborate in a manner that promotes wellness and satisfaction.

The opportunity to work on numerous projects that will revolutionise fire safety across the globe and the opportunity to travel to the corners of the world.

We have developed the complete digital fire safety management platform that will change how fire safety is managed throughout the world. TFS COMPLIANCE will not only reduce risk, but will enhance fire safety by providing data driven insights. It has already begun to change the perspective of fire safety from an administrative task back to a safety protocol, bringing security to fire safety within global companies.
How have you and Joule created positive changes in the world of fire safety ?
I joined Joule Group during summer 2019 as an intern in fire safety engineering. Immediately I joined the digital solutions team to develop unheard of technology that would revolutionise the fire safety industry. My experience and skills grew rapidly from the outset as I gained a range of exposure to both fire safety engineering and software development. By December 2019, I had become the technical lead in the digital solutions team and felt very interested in digital design. I began working very closely with designers and developers from across the world, and in Summer 2020 I made the decision to pursue a career in digital design. Fostered by Joule Group, I started my diploma in UX/ UI Design and was promoted to primary in-house UX designer within the Joule Group team.
Joule Group offers the chance to work with, and learn from, industry leaders in fire safety who truly foster opportunities for everyone to advance, grow and succeed. Joule Group genuinely promotes career progression which is evidenced by my own experiences. Within a short time frame, I have developed from an Intern Fire Engineer to a budding UX Designer. The company also offers flexible working options to support outside personal commitments. It also has many other attractive perks including recognition gifts, team events, and we have had virtual drinks a few times in the last year in our very own ‘Joules Cafe’.
