BEING A SCHOLAR AT BRYANSTON
This is reflected in our approach to scholarships. We look for individuals who have exceptional ability or potential in their chosen field, and support and encourage them to look beyond the curriculum and take their talents further than they may have thought possible. To enable this, our scholars have individual support from their hand-picked tutor, who is there to mentor, champion and guide them throughout their time at Bryanston. Scholars benefit from a programme of enrichment activities which include concerts, lectures, sporting events, trips and other opportunities to further develop their skills and independent learning. Through our talented alumni network we enable them to engage with leaders in their fields from science, music and sport to creative arts, business and beyond. In return, we expect our scholars to embrace the opportunities that Bryanston has to offer and participate fully in activities both in their chosen subject and beyond. We call on our scholars to support our major events, such as group visits, subject-specific talks and prep school days, and expect them to act as ambassadors for their specialism and for the School. We encourage our scholars to be subject champions within the School and engage their peer group to build enthusiasm for and commitment to their interests.
At Bryanston we are firmly focused on the individual and enabling every pupil to look further and explore their interests in order to achieve the very best outcomes.

ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS
Applications are encouraged from candidates who have the potential for outstanding performance in the subjects they propose to study in the sixth form. In order to evaluate potential, the candidate’s current school needs to forecast that they are likely to gain at least six 8/9 grades at GCSE and a report to this effect will be requested on receipt of application. In addition to this report, candidates will be invited to the School for evaluation.

Interviews
Our academic scholars demonstrate independence and commitment in their own learning. They will be given the space to explore their intellectual strengths beyond the confines of the curriculum and beyond their own immediate academic interests. We offer our scholars a wide range of academic enrichment opportunities outside the classroom through being a member of the Academic Scholars’ Society. These include academic lectures, concerts, plays and trips, as well as opportunities for presentation and debating.

The number and range of orchestras, ensembles, choirs and musical opportunities open to all pupils is extraordinary and around 600 individual music lessons are taught every week. There is a busy and rich series of concerts and recitals. Candidates must show leadership skills and possess determination, independent learning skills and – above all – a love for music. They should be around Grade 8 Distinction standard on their principal study. However, candidates who are not yet Grade 8 standard, but show significant ability, are encouraged to apply. Sport is an essential part of life at Bryanston and a minimum of three afternoons of sport is compulsory for pupils of all ages. The fundamental aim is for every pupil to developan ‘affectionate connection’ with sport and physical activity. Pupils of all abilities with the aspiration, desire and determination to pursue a career in sport are encouraged and supported in this aim through world- class facilities, experience and coaching. We are focused on a positive and disciplined team environment that provides space and focus on the individual and creativity. We want to encourage role models and leaders of the future. Our scholarship programme is centred around Bryanston’s Performance Sport Programme (PSP). PSP allows for bespoke, one-to-one training plans, delivered weekly with a view to following national player pathways for specific sports, and designed to ensure holistic personal development through focusing on both body and mind. Tutors of sport scholars are selected by the Headmaster and Director of Sport to ensure they are supported across the whole curriculum throughout their time at Bryanston. The selected tutors have experience of working with aspirational sportspeople and deliver outstanding pastoral support for sport scholars.
UDALL SPORT SCHOLARSHIPS
Bryanston is proud of its excellent sports provision, which has enabled many Old Bryanstonians to succeed at regional, national and international levels across a range of sports.
THE SPORT SCHOLARSHIP DAYS
Sport scholars receive great care and nurturing of their sporting talents and are expected to enter into the busy sporting life of the School with enthusiasm and commitment. Representing the School in matches throughout the year is a huge privilege and we are looking to award scholarships to pupils who are determined not only to help their own sporting aspirations, but also those of the School and their teammates.
Candidates who apply for sport scholarships should be able to show talent in the School’s core team sports, which include cricket, football, equestrian, hockey, netball, rowing and rugby. Candidates should have competed at county level or its equivalent in at least one of these. Talent in other sports is valued, so applications are welcomed, especially if also able to contribute to Bryanston’s sporting programme.
The sport scholarship assessment takes place over two days during the Autumn term and all candidates will be required to attend both days. Candidates will be expected to engage in a range of practical sports science sessions, including the use of force plates, motion analysis cameras, speed gates and physiological testing. Furthermore, candidates will be involved in practical sessions designed to test their skills in the School’s core sports, looking specifically at speed, agility, athletic ability, decision making, teamwork and initiative. Equipment for all sports is provided but candidates may bring their own if they wish. In addition to sporting skills, candidates will also be assessed for their leadership skills, enterprise, motivation and temperament, and the candidate’s current school will be asked for a report to provide further evidence of these qualities. Our aim is to find candidates who not only excel at sport, but who also show positive behaviours which will be catalytic to hard work and motivation or to that candidate’s year group as a whole.
A level candidates will be expected to sit either a general English or a general maths paper, while IB candidates will sit both the general English and general maths papers.
This is a nationally standardised, curriculum test and is not dependent upon any specific knowledge or preparation. The test, conducted under timed conditions, comprises a series of short questions designed to test reasoning, language and numeracy. Those taking the test have a set of introductory questions to complete, to give them a measure of what follows, before the actual timed test starts.
Candidates will be formally interviewed by the Head and will also meet with the Director of Sport.
