A historic harbour town set on the shores of the picturesque St Austell Bay. The first recorded mention of Mevagissey dates from 1313 when it was known as Porthilly. Towards the end of the 17th Century, Porthilly merged with the hamlet of Lamoreck to form the new village with the name Mevagissey derived from the names of two saints ‘St Meva’ and ‘St Issey’. The main sources of income at this time came from Pilchard fishing and Smuggling. The current harbour is built on the site of a medieval quay with an Act of Parliament in 1774 allowing the construction of the new port. The inner harbour, consisting of the current East and West Quays was built from this time with the outer harbour added in 1888. The port remains one of Cornwall’s few working harbours with a multitude of fishing vessels ensuring a colourful and interesting bustle at all times supplemented with regular fishing trips and a summer passenger ferry to Fowey. Surrounding the harbour is a myriad of narrow winding streets filled with a plethora of interesting shops, craft workshops, art galleries, cafés, hotels and local inns. Recent years have seen the village become a popular holiday destination together with the growth and development of waterside homes taking full advantage of the spectacular views. The town caters well for every day needs whilst more extensive facilities including supermarkets, secondary schools and leisure facilities are available in nearby St Austell. Other renowned tourist destinations including The Lost Gardens of Heligan are close by as are the popular sailing estuaries of the Fowey and the Fal.
Surrounding the town are miles of scenic coastline with the South West Coast Path, which passes near the property, offering stunning walks to nearby sandy beaches and coves. The local village of Gorran Haven boasts a delightful sandy beach and stone quay surrounded by National Trust land with noted walks to local landmarks including Maenease Point, Vault Beach, Dodman Point and Chapel Point. Around seventeen miles to the west is the Cathedral City of Truro, which now forms the retailing, administrative and cultural centre of the county. Both St Austell and Truro have mainline railway stations connecting with London Paddington whilst Newquay Airport on the north coast has a number of scheduled flights to both domestic and international destinations. Directions Travel into the heart of Mevagissey and the harbour. Proceed along East Quay towards the museum and the entrance to Little Meva will be evident on your left. The houses are at the very far end of East Quay.

The property lies on the south-eastern slopes of Carnmenellis, one of the great hills running down the spine of Cornwall. The landscape is wild and romantic with scattered small cottages and farms with fields enclosed by stone hedges made from granite moorland boulders. Sitting approximately 40m below the summit, the house enjoys a delightful rural position with far-reaching views across many miles of open countryside. The location is most attractive although not remote with other properties in the general area. Local amenities will be found at Stithians while a number of towns are within easy reach including Truro (13 miles), Falmouth, (9 miles) and Helston, (7 miles). All offer a good range of shopping facilities. A mile or so to the east is Stithians Reservoir, a body of water covering around 275 acres and offering a ranger of leisure pursuits including fishing, sailing, windsurfing and canoeing. But it is perhaps for bird watching that the reservoir is best known with a wide resident population supplemented by migrants. Also readily accessible is the north coastline which offers a choice of sandy beaches.
